Gladiator Jerry Goldsmith Soundtrack
For a film that promised such great potential for a truly killer score, instead Zimmer and Liza Gerrard produced one along the lines of Zimmer’s signature noise-for-music efforts. GLADIATOR is all texture and sound that’s meant to make us feel something — but doesn’t. It’s all empty and disappointing. There’s melody, but it’s never developed and it’s always trite.
Still, I must say that despite the absence of substance, Zimmer manages to build to heart-stopping moments. He gets you going, at least in terms of the testosterone-pumped beats of the story.

Gladiator Jerry Goldsmith Soundtrack The Edge
Most of the CD’s cues are short, though two are over ten minutes long. I can almost forgive the score’s non-movement in the short bursts. But even the longer pieces don’t go anywhere musically.
They justhappen. Clearly, the plot is moving along in front of the sounds, but the sounds themselves just sit. This is music that feels completely disconnected from the film it was written for.
It’s almost as if, to use the film’s violence as analogy, the lions came up from the floor of the Colosseum and just roared for the crowd without ever presenting an actual threat to Russell Crowe’s Maximus. That’s just what this music is: It’s got all the personality, all the chops, of disinterested man-eating animals.Release DetailsLabel: Decca 289 467 094-2Date: Apr-2000Country: United StatesFormat: CDTony Buchsbaum – Originally published in Soundtrack Magazine Vol.
